What Curtis demands for his music is a base of reality, and that is precisely what he found in "Super Fly," an ideal vehicle in which to express the beauty, the anguish, and the reality of the ghetto experience.

The rest is literally history. Writing, arranging and performing the soundtrack, as well as appearing in the film, Curtis demonstrated the gigantic appeal of his authentic artistry.

With heavy air-play and the immediate success of the film, it took the album less than three weeks to pass the million dollar mark, qualifying it as a gold record.

And that was only the beginning.

As album sales mushroomed, the first single off the album, "Freddie's Dead," with its powerful human warning about the dangers of addiction, became a major pop and r&b smash, with other songs like "Super Fly" to follow.
