Martin Luther King Jr. Classic Soul Dream Concert

Friday, April 4, 2008 is the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1973, a 2nd annual Benefit Concert for the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Social Change was held at the Omni arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

RCA Records was a big sponsor of the event.  Many of their artists performed.

I’ve produced a special 5 minute 50 second video flashback of this classic soul concert for all to enjoy.

Here’s the rundown of the original double album.

Keep The Dream Alive

Side 1

  • Introduction: Mrs. Coretta Scott King
  • “Precious Lord” - Linda Hopkins
  • "It’s My Belief” - Linda Hopkins
  • “No One’s Gonna Be a Fool Forever” - Friends of Distinction
  • Medley: “Love Or Let Me Be Lonely,” “Going In Circles,” “Time Waits for No One,” “Grazing In The Grass” - Friends of Distinction

Side 2

  • “Hey Leroy” - The Jimmy Castor Bunch

Side 3

  • “Make It With You” - Main Ingredient
  • “Work To Do” - Main Ingredient
  • Medley: “You’ve Been My Inspiration,” “Spinning Around (I Must Be Falling In Love),” “I’m So Proud,” “Everybody Plays the Fool” - Main Ingredient
  • Comments: Mrs. Coretta Scott King

Side 4

  • “We’ve Only Just Begun” - Jose Feliciano
  • “Oye Como Va” - Jose Feliciano
  • Comments: Flip Wilson
  • Funny Talk: Flip Wilson
  • “Don’t Knock My Love” pts. 1 & 2 - Wilson Pickett
  • “Don’t Let The Green Grass Fool You” - Wilson Pickett

Keep the Dream Alive was a great concert featuring strong performances.  The Atlanta community supported the effort with a large turnout.

Watch the video, then listen to my interview with Jimmy Castor and Gerry Thomas from 1977.

In honor of Dr. King’s legacy, this will be the only article posted in the Classic Soul R&B Music Jam this week.

Diana Ross Rocks Atlantic City

It was time.  I’ve never seen Diana Ross in concert live, so in celebration of another birthday, it was off to The Borgata in Atlantic City to catch Ms. Ross dish out some delicious diva magic to her casino city acolytes on Sunday evening, January 13th, 2008.

In an electrifying red gown, one of four different costume changes during the evening, the Boss opened the show with what else, “I’m Coming Out."

Next, it was sing-a-long time with 3 Supremes numbers:

  1. “My World Is Empty Without You Babe”
  2. “Baby Love”
  3. “Stop In The Name of Love”

Diana mixed the old and new quite well.  The sold out crowd thoroughly enjoyed the vintage Supremes songs.

Ms. Ross sounded terrific.  She seemed well rested with energy to spare.

Following the Supremes medley, Diana eased into “Touch Me In The Morning,” “Love Hangover,” “The Boss,” and “It’s My House,” rekindling the cachet of her solo hit catalogue.

Supremes chestnut “Love Child” grabbed the crowd next, before Ms. Ross sang the passionate ballad, “What About Love,” a new track from her 2007 album, I Love You.  This was one of the few tracks most people in the audience were not familiar with.

Diana then picked up the tempo with another crowd pleaser from I Love You, “More Today Than Yesterday."

She really shook the rafters next with “Upside Down” and a sparkling version of “Ease on Down The Road” from The Wiz.

What’s a Diana Ross concert without some Lady Sings The Blues?

Ms. Ross then performed 2 back-to-back blues ballads from her Lady Day connection.

With her fans shouting for more, Diana stepped into “Why Do Fools Fall in Love,” followed by “The Theme From Mahogany,” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough."

Her band was a small combo of electric guitar, electric bass, drums, percussion, keyboards, and a male and female background singer.  The songs sounded fine with these instruments, giving the older material a very contemporary feel.

The surprise of the night was the one encore after “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” a charged version of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” Towards the end of this song, a former mystery Supreme hit the stage to sing a short duet of the song with Diana.

Although the audience begged for a second encore, it was not to be.  I was waiting for “Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand,” but not tonight!

A younger friend who accompanied me said she enjoyed the show much better than Mary J. Blige who we both saw at the same arena last July.

I’m happy I’ve finally seen Diana Ross live.  It was worth the wait! Her performance was excellent.

Catch Diana Ross Tuesday, March 11, 2008, 8pm at Bank Atlantic Center Sinatra Theater, Sunrise, Florida.

Watch Diana Ross talk about the song “More Today Than Yesterday".

Tina Turner Turns it on One More Time

The 7 continent 9 city 2007 Live Earth concerts proved once again that it takes more than good looks and charisma to turn on stadium sized crowds.

You need the musical chops to “get over” with credibility in order to please audiences.

When Tina Turner headlined at Wembley Stadium, (one of the Live Earth venues), 7 years ago, she proved why she was deserving of her 1991 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Tina is also in the Guinness Book of Records for drawing the biggest crowd by a solo performer: 180,000 fans at Rio de Janeiro’s American Stadium in 1988.

Who was the first woman ever to perform at the Palace of Versailles in France?  Ms. Tina of course.

Her 4 decade career is captured in a 90 minute 2000 performance called Tina Turner: One Last Time Live in Concert, recorded on the final night of a two night gig at London’s Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000 fans.

We’re treated to a moving stage, electrifying pyrotechnics, and a Tina Turner performance that leaves the audience, dancing, singing, and shouting for more.

This performance wrapped up Tina’s Twenty Four Seven Millennium Tour 2000, and includes these songs:

  1. “I Want To Take You Higher”
  2. “Absolutely Nothing’s Changed”
  3. “Fool In Love”
  4. “Acid Queen”
  5. “River Deep, Mountain High”
  6. “We Don’t Need Another Hero”
  7. “Better Be Good To Me”
  8. “Private Dancer”
  9. “Let’s Stay Together”
  10. “What’s Love Got To Do With It”
  11. “When The Heartache Is Over”
  12. “Help”
  13. “Whatever You Need”
  14. “Sittin’ On The Dock of The Bay”
  15. “Try a Little Tenderness”
  16. “I Heard it Through the Grapevine”
  17. “Addicted to Love”
  18. “Simply The Best”
  19. “Proud Mary”
  20. “Nutbush City Limits”
  21. “Twenty Four Seven”

Over the next 12 months, you’ll get a chance to check out this concert on television one more time on many PBS stations who will air Tina Turner’s hot Wembley Stadium performance.

Is there R&B/Soul in Live Earth?

R&B/soul and hip-hop seem to be underrepresented this weekend in the 2007 global “concerts for a climate in crisis,” Live Earth.

The same observation was made in 2005 during Live 8, the 20th anniversary concert marking Live Aid, the 1985 benefit to raise awareness about African famine.

Alicia Keys, Akon, Kanye West, and Ludacris are scheduled to appear at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, Saturday, July 7th.

John Legend and Black Eyed Peas are on the bill in the United Kingdom at Wembley Stadium.

Rihanna touches down in Japan to sing at Makuhari Messe, the concert venue in Tokyo.

In South Africa, Angelique Kidjo, Joss Stone, and the Soweto Gospel Choir turn up the volume.

150 musicians across 7 continents in the United States, United Kingdom, South Africa, Brazil, China, Japan, Germany, and Australia are coming together during the 24 hours of Live Earth to encourage individuals to take action to solve the climate crisis.

Here are the host cities:

  1. New York
  2. London
  3. Johannesburg
  4. Rio de Janeiro
  5. Shanghai
  6. Tokyo
  7. Sydney
  8. Hamburg

Sirius Satellite Radio, XM Satellite Radio, and Worldspace (satellite radio) will broadcast coverage.

During the 24 hour concert period, the main television network NBC, along with MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, Sundance, Telemundo, UNI HD, and MUN2 will offer coverage.

Sundance channel has the earliest coverage, starting at 4 am Eastern.  Bravo will start their broadcast at 9 am Eastern.  The other channels will offer some coverage during the day.

NBC will anchor their coverage from 8 pm – 11 pm Eastern, Saturday night.

  • August: Friday 24th, Saturday 25th
  • August: Tuesday 28th, Friday 31st

Beyonce' and Mary J. Blige Summer Tour Tickets Top the Charts

It’s a high roller payday for Beyonce’ and Mary J. Blige as their Summer tours get ready to cash in on fans who can’t get enough of these charming ladies.

My eyes almost popped out of my head when I peeped the prices for Beyonce’s Saturday, August 11th, 2007 performance at the Trump Taj Mahal Arena in Atlantic City, NJ: $195.75, $165.75, and $95.75 at the low end.

Mary J. Blige, at the Borgata on Saturday, July 28th, also in A.C., isn’t much better: $135.00, $115.00, and $95.00.

These prices are out of control!  What happened to reasonably priced live entertainment from these headline performers?

Not that long ago, I went to see Patti Labelle at the Trump Taj Mahal Arena in Atlantic City, and the cost of the top ticket was about 1/5th of today’s prices.

What has happened to drive prices up almost 500%?

There are a lot of legitimate reasons, but greed plays a large part in the process as our pockets continue to be picked.

Last Summer, (2006), when Madonna tickets were going for around $300 each, people did a double take.  Let’s face it, at the time, Madonna wasn’t burning up the charts to command such a premium.

It’s time to get real.  Beyonce’, Mary J. Blige, and other acts are pricing their non-affluent fans out of the market to attend live concerts.

The cost factor difference between a music download for .99 cents, a CD for $20, and a $200 concert ticket is mind boggling.

Concert ticket prices reflect a growing cultural divide between the bling crowd who can afford the luxury, and working class people who deserve a better break at seeing these acts perform live (who they helped make famous).

If you’ve got the cash, tickets for Beyonce’s August 11th show in Atlantic City go on sale this Saturday, June 16th, at 12 noon.

Another option is to pray that you score free tickets from a radio station promotion.  Now that will be just like hitting the lottery!

Ashford & Simpson Send It

Ashford & Simpson’s 1977 classic soul album Send It is extremely rare.

This photo is from the back of the vinyl album cover.

”Don’t Cost You Nothin’,” and the underground hit “Bourgie Bourgie” lit up the dance floor back in the day.

Nick and Val are truly a unique act.  As solid as a rock, they managed to served up 35 R&B single releases through 1997.

As songwriters, it doesn’t get any better than Ashford & Simpson, who have written these time tested hits:

  • “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” – Diana Ross
  • “Let’s Go Get Stoned” – Ray Charles
  • “California Soul” – 5th Dimension

Catch Ashford & Simpson as the special guests of headliner Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Sunday, July 29, 2007, at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia, PA.
